Corporate News

The markets for renewable energies in Europe changed significantly in 2024. Sinking energy prices and major regulatory changes led to a slowdown in the positive drive for the energy transition. This dynamic made 2024 a challenging year – also for us. Nevertheless, thanks to our most important success factor, our talented employees, our “energy change-makers”, we managed to realise many great projects and continue to actively shape renewable energy solutions in a way that benefits everyone.

Our Highlights 2024

Our green gas team unlocks new opportunities: the virtual pipeline concept was implemented for the first time with an expected annual biomethane production of 35 GWh. Biomethane is produced decentrally, transported by truck and fed centrally into the public gas grid. Renera also procured long-term supplies of over 2 TWh of biomethane, primarily from Italy and Spain.

Near Karlsruhe, we are helping to use part of a quarry pond for a floating solar power plant. With an output of 19 MWp, it will be one of the largest of its kind in the region, large enough to cover the electricity needs of over 4,000 households.

We were able to obtain planning permission for five projects from our PV pipeline in Italy with a total capacity of over 80 MWp in 2024. These approved projects include a landfill site, a water-filled gravel pit, an industrial site and two agrovoltaic projects. These projects will start construction this year and are expected to be connected to the grid in early 2026.

We want to help advance the energy transition as quickly as possible and strive to open up new opportunities for people and companies along the way, while preserving our livelihoods for future generations.
In 2024, we supported stakeholders in all our business areas – project development, trading, consulting and funding – in switching to renewable energies and increasing their energy efficiency. We supported energy supply companies, property owners, companies and private individuals in reducing CO₂ emissions and overall energy consumption as well as increasing the percentage of renewable electricity and heat sources.

As we have done since our founding in 2006, we continued to advance the energy transition and make it tangible in 2024. We have also shared our expertise so that the community of “energy change-makers” continues to grow.

The following graphic provides an overview of the impact we have achieved together with our customers and partners. Unless otherwise stated, the savings potential relates to the total service life of the installations.

Project Development

500,000 households

will be supplied with electricity with the ground-mounted photovoltaic pipelines that are being developed and, in some cases, already planned in Italy, Germany and Romania.

  • Our Renera subsidiaries in Italy, Germany and Romania are developing ground-mounted and solar power plant pipelines with a cumulative capacity of 1 GWp (Italy), 300 MWp (Romania) and 50 MWp (Germany). These plants can cover the needs of around 500,000 households. The first 5 projects in Italy with over 80 MWp reached construction permit status in 2024 and are now being realised. The power plants are expected to be connected to the grid in early 2026.
  • We are working intensively on large battery storage projects to stabilise the regional electricity grids and maximise the potential of renewable power plants. Our BESS development pipeline in Italy, Germany and Romania currently totals 3.2 GW and has doubled within the last year. Six new projects are all located in the south of Italy, where a particularly strong expansion of renewable energies is expected over the next few years.

The share of renewable energies in electricity production continues to grow steadily. PV expansion in Europe reached a record high in 2024. For the first time, more electricity was produced with PV in Europe (11%) than with coal (9.7%). Almost half (47%) of the electricity in Europe was generated by renewable energy sources in 2024. We remain committed to the expansion of renewable energies and a fully renewable energy supply in Switzerland and Europe.

Solar power is the electricity generation technology with the lowest production costs and helps to massively reduce electricity costs for industry and private households. Renera is proud to make an important contribution to this ecological and economic progress.

Trading

555 GWh of biomethane

were delivered and thus contributed to the reduction of 99,800 tons of CO₂ in the gas grid.

  • To support the decarbonisation of the gas supply, we are constantly exploring renewable alternatives and trade in biomethane. In 2024, the volume of biomethane supplied amounted to 555 GWh.
  • Long-term purchase agreements enabled us to financially secure the construction of around a dozen new biogas plants.
  • In addition to biomethane, we were also able to procure 2.3 GWh of hydro and 7.5 GWh of PV electricity, which triggers additional CO₂ savings.

Biomethane is climate-friendly, storable and flexible to use. Thanks to our Europe-wide network, Renera enables the implementation of innovative concepts and makes high-quality biomethane available for a renewable energy supply across national borders.

Consulting and Project Realisation

269,000 m² of energy reference area

analysed in terms of energy efficiency.

  • Through our operational optimisations alone, including 65 heat generation systems, 500 MWh of energy is saved each year.
  • Energy reporting is used to account for the energy flows of properties. We support the energy reporting of 300 properties.
  • In 18 projects, we supported the replacement of medium-sized and larger heating systems as the client’s representative; the CO₂ savings achieved amount to 1,600 tons per year. 20 further projects are already in the pipeline.

8’900 households

will be supplied with fossil-free district heating in the future.

  • Our experts supported the further development of nine heating network projects, which could lead to reductions of up to 38,000 tons of CO₂ per year.
  • We were also able to develop a new energy plan for five municipalities in the canton of Aargau to support them in the energy transition.

The heat transition, i.e. the sustainable supply of heat in buildings, is an important building block on the path to decarbonisation. Our neutral analyses show how the value and attractiveness of properties can be increased trough a sustainable heat supply. We help to realise heating network projects profitably.

8.35 MWp newly in operation

In 2024, we continued to support customers in Switzerland, Germany and Spain in realising the PV potential of their portfolios.

  • For major real estate clients in Switzerland, Germany and Spain, we supported the implementation and commissioning of over 80 medium-sized and large-scale photovoltaic systems.
  • 84 systems are currently being implemented and around 40 new systems are already in the pipeline for 2025.

The real estate sector is an important driver in the expansion of solar power. Property analyses are an important step towards identifying the existing potential and leveraging it profitably.

Operation & Maintenance

705 solar, heating and ventilation systems

are monitored for optimal functioning on our monitoring platform.

  • 350 photovoltaic systems are already registered on our monitoring portal.
  • More than 355 building technology systems – solar thermal systems, heat pumps, heating systems with district heating or fossil fuels, and ventilation systems – were monitored with LORALARM in 2024 and optimised for efficient operation. Many more systems will be added in 2025.

Our experience from analysing hundreds of systems shows that around 25% are affected by operational failures or unnoticed malfunctions. Through the intelligent use of simple sensors, we ensure the safe operation and maximized performance of all systems.

Subsidy programmes

68,1 GWh of electricity

savings were enabled by our electricity efficiency subsidy programmes.

  • Our ProKilowatt subsidy programmes Optivent and Pumpind supported projects for ventilation and pump replacement, which enabled a total of 48,5 GWh of electricity savings. A total of over CHF 1 million in subsidies was paid out to the projects.
  • We managed the project submissions to Prokilowatt for a total of 6 major projects. These were awarded funding in 2024 thanks to our support. This secured a further CHF 570,000 in subsidies, which will support projects with electricity savings of 19.6 GWh.

With its focussed range of subsidies in the area of electricity efficiency for pumps, ventilation systems and large-scale projects, Renera’s Energie Zukunft Schweiz subsidy offers provide a wide range of funding opportunities for electricity savings in all sectors and industries.

520,000 tons of CO₂

savings by 2030.

  • With the 550 climate bonus funding commitments in 2024, projects for the replacement of renewable heating systems with a total output of around 40 MW were made possible, which will save an additional 90,000 tons of CO₂ by 2030.
  • Since the start of the subsidy programme in 2020, the cumulative CO₂ savings now amount to over 520,000 tonnes.

The Energie Zukunft Schweiz “Climate Bonus” subsidy programme by Renera makes replacing heating systems much more financially attractive and thus accelerates the heating transition in Switzerland.

Know-How Transfer

17,800 people

informed about energy issues and motivated to take action.

  • With the Linie-e education and visitor platform, we welcomed around 15,000 visitors to 830 events at various energy and water infrastructure facilities and workshops in classrooms. Our guided tour of the Biopower biogas plant was nominated for the EBA Green Horizon Narrative Award in 2024.
  • Around 2,800 people used our online virtual classroom in 2024.
  • Since Linie-e was founded, we have already been able to show over 237,000 interested people energy, drinking water and wastewater plants as well as impart knowledge about them in the classroom. The transfer of know-how through Linie-e is currently supported by 25 partner companies.
  • With workshops, excursions and joint projects, we support the energy supply companies of the Energie Zukunft Schweiz Association in their daily challenges. We have also held events for the biogas sector to impart knowledge on topics such as heating networks and biogas certificates.

Knowledge transfer is crucial in order to successfully drive forward the energy transition. Renera therefore shares energy knowledge with as many people and institutions as possible and motivates them to take action. We generate synergies by networking with stakeholders in the energy system.

Our commitment to the environment.

Our most important and effective commitment to the environment are our green energy solutions. At Renera, we create real value for our customers because it enables us to realise our vision of a climate-friendly world.

All our projects are ultimately aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions, increasing the use of renewable energies and improving energy efficiency:

  • We develop projects such as solar power plants, battery storage plants or heating networks for the use of renewable energies. We also develop specific products and services that act as catalysts for the energy transition. One example of this is our new division for sustainable asset management and our LORALARM monitoring system.
  • We actively network with players from different sectors and thus create synergies for the further development of the energy supply.
  • We help energy supply companies to produce, procure and market green energy.
  • We advise real estate owners holistically on energy management: on the generation or procurement of solar power, on the use of renewable heat and on increasing energy efficiency through building insulation or intelligent control systems. We are also committed to climate-friendly mobility and advise our clients on charging stations and charging management for electric vehicles.
  • Through funding programmes and our expertise, we are making the energy transition profitable for everyone. Renewable energies are becoming the first choice, as increasing efficiency pays off time and again.
  • We provide information about the opportunities of the energy transition and bring concrete examples to life – at events, at energy plants, in the classroom and online. In this way, we motivate many people every year to actively contribute to the energy transition themselves.
Renera as a key player

As a company, we consume energy and resources ourselves. The three most relevant areas for this are electricity consumption, heating requirements and mobility for our employees’ commutes and business trips.

  • Renera purchases 100% renewable electricity for all offices. All our Swiss offices are heated with renewable heat. In Basel, for example, we heat with district heating and in Zurich with district heating and 100% biogas. Our German office is heated with a groundwater heat pump. The heating requirements of our offices in Italy and Romania are offset with biogas certificates where necessary so that all the heat we need is CO₂-neutral.
  • Our large locations are deliberately chosen to be central and close to the train station so that our employees and customers can travel to them by public transport or bicycle. We also generally use public transport to meet with our customers. All employees are given the opportunity to work remotely. The flexibility of our work methods in terms of time and location reduces commuting.

We also influence global resource and energy consumption when purchasing products and services. Our procurement guidelines therefore include ethical and ecological framework conditions.

In 2024, our employees booked around 2,500 national and international train journeys. Wherever possible, we rely on climate-friendly forms of mobility. Passenger transport operated by Schweizerische Bundesbahnen, Deutsche Bahn and Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane is powered by almost 100% green electricity.
In 2024, our employees used a total of 51 short-haul flights and one long-haul flight for business trips. This caused CO₂ emissions of around 14 tons.
Car journeys are necessary for specific projects, such as visiting the land areas for ground-mounted solar or battery storage in Germany, Italy and Romania. We use the “Mobility” car-sharing system for journeys in Switzerland. In 2024, our employees drove a total of 50,479 kilometres. The corresponding CO₂ emissions amount to approx. 17.3 tons (average fuel consumption: 8l/100km)

Our commitment to society.

As a medium-sized company, we are aware of our social responsibility and take it seriously:

  • Training: We offer internships, provide working students with an opportunity to earn extra income and employ graduates. We support our employees and provide them with ongoing training.
  • Ethical and ecological behaviour: We have developed a set of rules for business ethics, the Code of Conduct. When selecting our suppliers, we adhere to our procurement guidelines, which contain ethical and ecological criteria.
Flexible working models: Our employees can work flexibly both in terms of time and location. This makes it easier to maintain a good work-life balance. 61% of all employees work part-time.
  • Diversity: At Renera, we value the potential of diversity in teams. We aim to achieve the highest possible level of diversity, including women in management positions. With a 40% share of women, we are above the industry average. To contribute to the successful collaboration of as many groups of people as possible in the energy sector, we offered three diversity workshops for our employees in 2024.

March 2024: Diversity dialogue event on International Women’s Day. Together, we developed a common understanding of diversity and discussed our expectations and experiences on the topic of equality.

September 2024: Wen-Do lesson. During a trial lesson, our employees were able to practice Wen-Do, a physical and mental self-defence and self-assertion concept.

November 2024: Dealing with boundary violations in customer contact. How can we deal with discrimination confidently? In this workshop, all employees were invited to develop solutions together.
